Telematics
The dawn of telematics (a word created by combining "telecommunications" and "Informatics") began with GM OnStar. In 1998, “Bluetooth” was named and the first hands-free gateways were introduced. In 2000, the first mobile phone with Bluetooth technology went on the market. By 2002, Bluetooth gave us advanced voice integration features. And by 2010, 3G multimedia car entertainment systems were made available.
Bluetooth, like every innovation, was dependent upon many earlier technologies. In a quiet attempt to help the war effort of the 1940s, the actress Hedy Lamarr quietly invented “frequency hopping spread spectrum.” It was a precursor to many of the wireless technologies we use today, including Bluetooth, GPS and cell phone networks. She wasn’t honored for her invention, however, until the 1980s.
